Trapeze’s AI-powered heat maps are helping Dubai’s taxis pick up more passengers and reduce unpaid kilometres – the Dubai RTA explains how.

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the development of smart heat maps in taxis, showing areas of high demand and areas where passengers are more likely to be found. These heat maps are updated directly based on data being monitored and analysed using artificial intelligence in the control center, where the driver of the vehicle is informed by the colours indicated in the smart meter of which zones he should go to take the passengers.


Control room

Adel Shakeri, director of the RTA’s Transportation Systems Department, told Al Bayan that about 8,200 cabs were equipped with smart meters that directly connect with the control room. These include a range of features including the heat maps and connectivity through a tracking system of 10,800 vehicles. All taxis will be upgraded with these smart meters by the middle of this year.

He explained that the heat maps in the cabs use three colors: green, yellow and red. Green signals to the driver that a particular ​​destination is experiencing high demand from passengers, while yellow indicates that there are enough vehicles in the area to meet demand. Red symbolises a lack of passengers in the area or that there are more available vehicles than needed, so the driver should go to another area.


Data analysis

Adel pointed out that the heat maps are updated directly through the control center, which monitors the movement of taxis and demand in Dubai (which has been divided into 200 target areas), using artificial intelligence. The control system analyses passenger demand data and compares it to the number of vehicles located in the area to measure the taxi fleet’s ability to meet demand; this is then broadcast in the form of a heat map in the smart meters.



He explained that the heat maps will contribute to achieving the highest satisfaction rates for customers in terms of arrival times, which will be vastly reduced thanks to the demand indicators shown by the map. The heat maps ensure that vehicles will now be sent to places where the demand is high, and will provide drivers are important tool to search for passengers, reduce fuel consumption and contribute to environmental conservation by reducing emissions.
